Independent Emergency Physicians

Why Partner with IEP?

Independent Emergency Physicians was founded by eleven like-minded physicians. In 1997, IEP set as its goal to change the business of emergency medicine. Beginning with one contract, IEP created a unique partnership organized around democratic decision-making and equal ownership.

In 2011, IEP contracts with 5 different hospital sites in southeast Michigan working with St. John Providence Health System, Trinity Health System, Garden City Hospital and Allegiance Health. We provide emergency care for over 250,000 patients annually.

What makes us different is:

Outstanding Emergency Physicians and Mid-Level Providers

Since our beginning, Independent Emergency Physicians has been uniquely successful at attracting the highest caliber emergency physicians. Our physician partners are active on many levels in the communities they serve and hold positions on hospital boards, credentialing committees, in county EMS and medical societies as well as serving as the Medical Director at our sites. Board certification is a requirement of employment at Independent Emergency Physicians. In addition, our physicians are often called upon to present on a variety of topics in the field sharing their experience and expertise.

IEP Medical Directors

We believe that not only is it important to have the best physicians in place maintaining a positive working relationship with the ED nurses and staff, but having the right Medical Director is key to a successful partnership between IEP and a client hospital. Each Medical director is responsible for administrative, clinical and technical skill areas. The Director is expected to foster a relationship with our client sites that is a collaborative, professional partnership. IEP makes a commitment to its client hospital as well as to the local community to provide an excellent level of emergency care.

Physician Education

All IEP physicians are encouraged to belong to one or more of the recognized professional societies and many physicians choose to obtain their CME credits through the educational offerings of these societies. In addition, IEP offers an annual Risk Management seminar to address trends and issues within emergency medicine. We have developed an Ultra sound training program to educate and train our physicians using these diagnostic techniques.

Strong Operational Performance and Process Improvements

Delivering strong operational performance continues to be a challenging requirement across all emergency departments and it is a primary focus for Independent Emergency Physicians. Operational improvements are reflected in our successful work in the following areas:

Patient Flow

Optimizing patient flow and decreasing time-to-provider (TTP) is a key element in emergency medical care. Changes to any process require buy-in from the physicians, nurses, and hospital administrators. Independent Emergency Physicians recognizes that the evaluation of work flow processes is an on-going task. Partnering with the hospital staff, enhancements have been made in patient care by implementing a variety of tools to improve the flow within our Emergency Departments. Some of these include: Six Sigma, LEAN, Pathways and a focus on administrative leadership. In addition, processes such as registration, triage initiatives, and admission are monitored to identify additional areas of improvement.

We optimize our service level by the networking of our physicians across our different sites. Customization of shift schedules and provider coverage is constantly monitored and reviewed to ensure that we are meeting and exceeding the patient and client site’s needs.

Support for Specialized Patients

We have developed services to support the management of targeted patient populations within the emergency department to address specialized patient and client hospital needs. Express Care, Urgent Care, Pediatrics and Senior Care are all focused on a specific need of service at our different sites.

Collaborative Hospital Partnerships

IEP promotes the health and well-being of patients and their families by partnering with health care systems that are committed to excellence in emergency medical care. IEP believes that the emergency department is the front door to the hospital and acts accordingly. The impact of strong service performance is seen in the following areas:

  • Support of outstanding training programs in Residency and hospital staff training
  • Collaborative Trauma Designation
  • ACLS Training for Staff
  • Community Outreach
  • Participation in Medical Staff Leadership and emergency staff committees
Team Based Approach

We believe that team work is key to improving patient satisfaction, reducing medical errors, increasing productivity and expediting admissions. Our group is committed to promoting an atmosphere of mutual respect, and teamwork among the ED team. Our corporation’s work ethic positively impacts the emergency department’s patient service level and productivity.

Strong Quality Performance

In working with the best emergency medicine providers, IEP provides its physicians with the education and system support necessary to make measurable quality improvements. An area where quality performance is impacted includes:

  • Compliance Regulation
  • Physician Productivity

Customer Service Focus

IEP developed and implemented a corporate based customer service program which highlights its core strategy of providing service excellence in patient care. On an annual basis, physician groups attend national customer service seminars to assist in identifying new trends and practices for patients and their families. IEP also has a Customer Service team whose focus is on providing information and training to IEP’s physicians and physician extenders through role playing, scripting and call backs to patients.
