Program Overview and Goals

Each year has a stepwise emphasis in the development of the emergency physician.  As growing clinicians, the expectations and abilities will increase exponentially.  Each post graduate year will have its own goals and emphasis.  You will begin with a traditional Osteopathic Emergency Medicine emphasis internship and end your PGY-4 year as a resident that built their clinical understanding and confidence becoming an outstanding Emergency Medicine Physician.

Training at a Level II Community Facility

Garden City Hospital is a Level II facility with nearly every specialty on staff, with residencies in Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Radiology, OB/GYN, Family Practice and fellowships in Cardiology and Gastroenterology.  As a Level II center, our ED sees a significant amount of both blunt and penetrating priority 1 trauma.  With no in house trauma team available, the EM attending and resident physicians serve as the trauma team.  As a result, the resident becomes well versed in trauma protocol and stabilization.  Often the resident must coordinate the transfer of critical patients, whether Trauma or otherwise, to larger tertiary care institutions by ground or air evacuation.  Not only does this add to the educational experience of the resident, but better prepares one for nearly any practice environment upon Graduation from Residency.

Hours

Emergency residency residents at Garden City Hospital work 10 hour shifts.  As a first year resident, you will be expected to work 18 shifts, 17 as a second year and 16 as a third year.  You will not be required to take call as a resident.  Residents participating in off service rotations like neurology, cardiology, trauma surgery and orthopaedics  are expected to work the same schedule as other residents.
