The Facility

Providence Hospital, Southfield is a 365-bed tertiary care facility located in suburban Detroit. The surrounding community is one of the most culturally diverse in the nation. At Providence, more than 900 credentialed physicians in over 50 specialties care for approximately 20,000 inpatients each year. Providence is a major teaching center with over 140 residents and fellows in a wide variety of specialties including internal medicine, family practice, general surgery, neurosurgery, and obstetrics/gynecology. Providence Hospital is also a JCAHO certified stroke center and a nationally recognized center for cardio-vascular services.

This emergency department has 40 treatment cubicles and services over 60,000 patients annually. New construction will increase the department to 56 cubicles and is anticiapted to be completed by 2012. Other features include a dedicated state-of-the art Chest Pain Unit providing continuous 12-lead EKG monitoring, a Fast-Track Unit and an interdepartmental x-ray suite that uses computerized radiography technology.

The department is staffed 24 hours a day by Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physicians and the hospital provides 24 hour on-call for most specialties.
