The Facility

St. Joseph Mercy – Oakland, a 485-bed facility, is located in suburban Detroit, 20 miles outside the city.  It is noted in the top 100 hospitals for cardiology services and is a JACHO accredited site for stroke victims.  The Emergency Center is a 39-bed facility that services approximately 44,000 patients annually. The newly renovated, state of the art Emergency Center is staffed 24 hours a day by Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physicians.  The attending staff provides 24 hour on-call for all specialties.  Residency programs are established in radiology, internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology. The Emergency Center provides a full spectrum of emergency care, including all urgent and emergent adult and pediatric cases.  Our new process allows the physician to see patients within 20 minutes and also allows the nursing staff to initiate orders more efficiently.  A CDU (Clinical Decision Unit) combines the former Short Stay Observation and Chest Pain Evaluation Unit and services those patients who require <23 hours for a full diagnostic work-up and/or nursing care.
